Conclusion

In Western Barta‘a, the two major identities which serve as the transmitting force are Israeli and Arab. The construction of Israeli identity is mainly through the use of borrowed features. The Arab-Palestinian identity encourages Standard Arabic features, setting up a tension and modifying the degree of use. In Eastern Barta‘a, the most influential identity is Palestinian, explaining the rapid linguistic change in progress towards standard Arabic, and the great sensitivity to its use.

These results show that the study of language in relation to identity reveals interesting explanations of sociolinguistic variation. Most sociolinguistic studies have been satisfied with correlations between language behaviour and socio-demographic facts, and causation is seldom analyzed. In this study we have started building a unified model, bringing sociology (and politics and economics) into sociolinguistics through social psychology.
